BOATING TIPS -- AUGUST, 1997
Dining and Cruising

Joe Coons

First Mates, Unite! Fight the oppressive conditions you face as galley slaves! Insist upon a dinner or lunch ashore when cruising! To assist, here's a list of nearby places we've found. We welcome suggestions you may have for other good spots . . .

ROSARIO: ROSARIO RESORT 376-2222. Recommended for dinner, reservation suggested. Quality can be very good, but sometimes inconsistent.

ORCAS ISLAND: Docking at Olga, the CAFE OLGA, about a 10 minute walk from the dock. Excellent lunches in the island's artist co-op, interesting building with good art (comparable food to Colophon Cafe in Fairhaven). CHRISTINA'S, Eastsound, North Beach Road, 376-4904. Expensive, good, well liked. Some believe best in the San Juans. Reservation recommended.

FRIDAY HARBOR: ROBERTO'S, 1st & A St., 378-6333, about a block above the ferry terminal for dinner (make reservations). Excellent Italian, although we haven't been there in 1997. Also the SPRINGTREE CAFE, 310-C Spring St. 378-4848, on the main drag about three blocks up the hill on the right side. Emphasis on healthful food, well prepared, lunch or dinner. Surprisingly, DOWNRIGGERS, 10 Front St. 378-2700, just to left of marina is consistently good, with very extensive summer menu. We have also had good meals at THE PLACE NEXT TO THE FERRY, although it's fairly simple in decor/atmosphere.

ROCHE HARBOR RESORT: 378-2155 Most folks admit the reason to dine here is the atmosphere, for the food is average and expensive. The sundown flag ceremony may make it worth it, and the pub and bar is fun for those who enjoy a bit of noise with their drinks.

THE INN AT SEMIAHMOO: 371-2000. STARS is the gourmet dining room here, and quite good. Expensive. There is a more casual place, PACKERS, above the beach, and on weekends, a casual but tasty pasta bar/buffet is offered in a third family-casual area.

MONTAGUE HARBOR: LA BERENGERIE (250) 539-5392, reservations a must, is an excellent small restaurant in the French tradition: the proprietress does the serving and much of the cooking, and offers only a couple of selections each night. You'll get a full dinner with appetizer, salad, and dessert, all excellent, for $24.50(C) per person, and every wine on the list is $22(C) per bottle. A ten minute walk from the Montague Harbor Marina.

SALTSPRING ISLAND: GANGES: HASTINGS HOUSE (250) 537-2362 is the gourmet spot, very expensive, and in some seasons serves only their hotel guests, but worth a try to see if you can arrange to have an outstanding, expensive dinner. About a ten-minute walk to the north of Ganges Marina at 160 Upper Ganges Road. We also like two casual places in the heart of Ganges, PICCOLOS and the Greek place, ALFRESCO. Both consistent "7's" and reasonable. Both have lunch and dinner.

BEDWELL HARBOR, SOUTH PENDER ISLAND: THE RESTAURANT AT BEDWELL HARBOR RESORT (250) 629-3212. Dinner very nice here in lovely setting. Busy in mid-season weekends.

MAPLE BAY: THE QUAMICHAN INN (250) 746-7028, Reservations a must. Excellent food, very highly regarded. Free shuttle from Maple Bay marina.

SIDNEY, B.C.: THE LATCH (250) 656-6622. An excellent restaurant modeled after an English country inn. Free pickup for parties of four or more at Port Sidney Marina --- it's about a thirty minute walk, at the head of the Van Isle Marina docks in Tsehum Harbor.

Let me hear from you with your suggestions. Happy dining and keep safe!
