Happy opening day! I'm looking forward to seeing all of you on May 1 as we celebrate the “official” start of the boating season.
One thing that I'm going to do again this year is stay away from any alcohol until we've got the boat back at the dock! Just as many of you, I'll have a boatload of guests and I don't want any hurt . . . And just like any boat-lover, I certainly don't want to hurt the boat!
I've been busy helping Roger Van Dyken's company get into the power boat charter business, and Roger recently gave me a proposed agenda for a powerboat school based on Chapman's.
Well, I'll tell you, I realized right away that if I was going to teach this course, I'm going to have to brush up on a few of my basics, in spite of my credentials (master's license and so forth). So I'm getting out my battered Chapman's and re-reading it.
The navigation rules aren't so tough for me, because I've gotten into the habit of mentally applying them whenever I hear signals, see vessels crossing paths, note marks, or see lit vessels.
I hate to not know the answer when someone asks, so I'm going to try to get up to speed. I hope you will, too.
By the way, note the great idea John Gargett has put together with Horace and Mike from Tri County Engine for a program on May 6! I'm definitely going to try to be at this interesting session. The more I know about my Diesels, the more money I'll save on maintenance!
Have Fun!
