BOATING TIPS -- December 1999
Inspect Your Own Boat

Joe Coons

When I went on the predicted log race in November, some repair work was being done on my boat so I borrowed a friend's boat for the trip. Because the vessel wasn't mine, I was much more cognizant of any anomalies in the boat's operation, and prepared a list of some 20 items, mostly minor, that needed attention.

My friend leaves the boat's maintenance supervision up to me, so the trip served as a quality control check on everything about the craft. And because I was prepared with pad and paper, I could make a note of everything to be corrected or inspected.

As a result of that trip, I'd like to recommend you do the same with your boat: at least take along a boating buddy with high standards with whom you've agreed to “let it all hang out”, and make note of every little problem he/she detects. It's a great way to get ready for next summer.

Have a great winter: see you at the boat shows!
