Basic Small Boat Sailing Course

The Basic Small Boat Sailing Course provides the beginning sailor with the knowledge and skills needed to sail small boats under the supervision of a qualified coach. The emphasis is on fun, safety, and on-the-water experience as we learn sailing terminology, theory, and boat-handling skills. Students will become confident in sailing their boat, and will receive an introduction to the teamwork involved in sailing on larger boats. Focus will be on the skills listed in parts 1 and 2 of the course outline, with introduction to the material in parts 3 and 4.

After completing the course, students will have the opportunity to participate in weekly dinghy racing, keelboat racing, and/or relaxed weekend sailing activities through the Junior Sailing Club.

The Basic Sailing Course will be offered three times during the Summer. The course is two weeks long, with sessions held Monday through Friday from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.each day. Enrollment is open to all young people ages 8 to 18. Class size is limited to 12 students (6 per coach), and each course is taught by Certified Sailing Instructors.

Prerequisites: Ability to swim 100 yards and float for 5 minutes without floatation aids. Students will be required to demonstrate this ability at the start of the course. No previous sailing experience is required. All basic skills will be taught during this course.

Cost: $290 (includes $50 required annual membership in the Junior Sailing Club) Register online, or by mail.

What to Bring:

Life Jackets are required at all times in the boats. The Junior Sailing Club can provide one, but students will appreciate having a properly-fitted sailing vest of their own.

Wetsuits are highly recommended and may be required depending upon the weather at the sole discretion of the sailing coach.. See the Wet Wind Chill Chart for suggestions on how to dress for dinghy sailing.

Bring lunch and a quart water bottle.
