How to use the Wet Wind Chill Table

  1. Get the predicted temperature, wind speed, and humidity from a weather report.
  2. If the temperature is less than 45 degrees, use the right hand table with temperature and wind speed to get the colored "feels like" wind chill temperature.. If the temperature is more than 45 degrees, use the left hand table with temperature and humidity to get the colored "feels like" temperature.
  3. If the weather is partly sunny, shift left one square. For full sun, shift left two squares.
  4. Check the Water Temperature table and note the level of insulation required to spend 30 minutes in the water.
  5. Use the color of the square you choose to enter the Suggested Sailing Gear table.

Wet Wind Chill Table by Geoff Farmer, March 2004. This information is experimental and intended only to suggest appropriate levels of insulation for dinghy sailing. Use with caution. This table is free to use with acknowledgement to the author. Wind Chill data provided by National Weather Service. Wet Bulb data interpolated from The American Practical Navigator.
