Where will you be the Fourth of July? Many of us are planning to raft up and watch the fireworks, then go to Inati Bay for the weekend. You're welcome to bring your boat and join us. Nervous about going across the Bay at night? Just follow Serendipity or one of the sailboats. We'll be going so slow that any debris you hit won't be a problem.
Elsewhere in the Jib Sheet you will find an article about the Kid's Cruise, held jointly with Swinomish Yacht Club. Hope to see you, and your kids or grandkids, at Blakely Island that weekend.
Weather played a part in our Jr. Ski to Sea Regatta, Open House, and Auction weekend. Unfortunately, the role was to dampen everyone's spirits-and their bodies--and attendance was less then we hoped. The kids who participated in the regatta did sail several races, though. We thank the Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce and Industry for cosponsoring the event with us.
The auction to raise money for scholarships for summer learn-to-sail lessons and youth fleet maintenance was also affected by the weather. Even so, Marlene Bolster, auctioneers Steve Moore and Jack Black, and the rest of the Youth Fleet put on a fine event that will help support their programs.
Lots of other things going on this summer, for both boaters and non. Check the Jib Sheet or call the officers for more details.
We have just received the financial results for the eight months ending May 31. Our net receipts and expenditures are within $3000 of our budgeted amount; however, that budget included a surplus "cushion" of over $10,000 so we aren't in any trouble. Expenditures are higher primarily because it has taken longer than anticipated to convert to our new accounting system-but we think we see the light at the end of that tunnel.
With the accession of the new dock, BYC now has about 140' of space to rent to its members who don't have permanent moorage in Squalicum Harbor. If you have a boat but no place to put it, call Fleet Captain Black for more information. We're saving 100' of the dock for reciprocal moorage, and for temporary use by members.
This is my tenth Jib Sheet article as Commodore. In less than three months, BYC will elect a new Board of Directors and my position will become that of "has been." We have come a long way in the past year, but we aren't yet finished with our transitions. Soon Vice Commodore Bradley will be assembling his team of committee chairs and key volunteers, and he would certainly appreciate your help. I encourage you to give him a call to volunteer your ideas and support.
Enough for now … see you at the Club or on the water!
