Commodore's Column

Chuck McCord, Commodore

Summer is here and boating season is in full swing. Jr. Sailing is back on track, thanks to Jr. Sailing Fleet Captain Lynn Hamilton & her husband Bruce. We would like to see more kids in this program. If any of you know of any kids that would be interested in sailing, call Lynn or Bruce 715-2108. BYC members only have to sign up their kids. There are no additional membership fees. Non-member kids have to join at $36.00 a year.

The regular sailors are doing quite well. Sailing Fleet Captain Keith McLean is setting a fine example of our volunteer system. The program is successful and the costs are under control. Good job Keith.

For any of you that have been watching the financial progress of the Club, we are doing fine. With that in mind I have two more goals that I would like to see happen before my term is up. First I would like to finish our job of upgrading our building by putting a new roof on the flat part of the building which leaks and has not been replaced for many years. A new torch down roof will cost us a little over $5,000 including all expenses. We replaced the main pitch part of the roof two years ago. This is a necessary fix and we can afford to pay cash for the job. The other goal is to take advantage of the recent changes in the banking industry which is now offering fixed mortgages on commercial loans. Our current mortgage on the building is now just below $200,000; thanks partly to the Life Ring program. Our current rate is adjustable and can change twice monthly. If interest rates start rising again, our rate and payments rise with them. I have talked to several banks looking for the best deal. I'm convinced that we can improve our interest rate and secure the amount of our monthly payment. Any comments, please feel free to call Enjoy the Summer!
