Commodore's Column

Chuck McCord, Commodore

We just returned from a great weekend cruise at Friday Harbor. The weather was mostly sunny and warm. The calm seas both over and return were a pleasant change. This was a joint cruise with Wheel & Keel. Someone said that there were 28 boats there, one left early Saturday afternoon so there were probably 29 at the event. Tom and Linda Selman were breaking in their new 50' Nordhaven long distance cruiser that had recently been delivered from California. Ron and Debbie Reitman were enjoying their first cruise aboard their new 30' Bayliner. Tom agreed to chair the upcoming trophy fishing cruise to Rivers inlet, in British Columbia. It will be sometime around the first of august. If you would like to sign up for this cruise, call Tom at 398-8556.

Fleet Captain Bob Knudsen refused to have a cancelled program, so he invited all those who had signed up for the canceled Winemaker's dinner (due to not enough committed to support the program) to his and Rose's beautiful home to enjoy a fine steak. We all brought different wines to taste and share. This was an enjoyable evening..

The next big event is OPENING DAY. We have a fun day planned, you will not want to miss this one. Theme is Fabulous Fifties, so bring your hoola hoops and wear your best capri pants. A complete schedule is later in this issue, but one highlight is - our own County Executive Pete Kremen and Al Sandi of Music To Go entertaining us as 50's disc jockeys down on the docks. The Port of Bellingham and the Breakwater restaurant are bringing in a full Reggae bank called “Andy O”. They will be on a boat touring the whole harbor and then in the evening playing dance music at the Breakwater. All BYC members are invited, starting with the Commodore's Reception at 11:00 a.m.

There is room on the review boat for members who do not have a ride. And of course there is all the activity on the docks following the parade.

The next cruise is a dinner cruise to Montague Harbor on May 15 and 16. Some folks are heading over Friday the 14th. This is a very relaxing spot and I hear tell there is great food. To make sure you have a spot, call Joe Coons at 733-7390.

If you have a great cruise idea for this season and you would like other BYC members to join in, give me or Fleet Captain bob a call and we will help get it organized. There are a lot of reciprocal clubs out there that we can plan numerous mini cruises to.

SEE YOU OPENING DAY!
